What is Maya Bay actually like since it reopened?
Let’s be straight with you, because this is the question we answer most at our Chalong counter. Maya Bay closed for almost three years so its reef and blacktip sharks could recover — and the recovery worked. The water at the mouth of the bay is clearer than most guests have ever seen it. But the reopening came with rules that are enforced: boats moor at a pier on the Loh Samah side, you walk a boardwalk to the beach, and swimming inside Maya Bay is forbidden. Rangers watch. You can stand ankle-deep at the edge, photograph the famous cliffs, and that is it.
This tour gives you about a full hour at Maya — generous by speedboat standards — so you can enjoy it without the sprint-photo-leave feeling. The actual swimming comes next, and it is better anyway.
Where do you really swim on this trip?
Pileh Lagoon. It is a flooded canyon of emerald water inside Phi Phi Leh’s limestone walls, calm at the entrance and perfect for jumping from the bow and paddleboarding. Guests who arrive dreaming of Maya leave talking about Pileh — we see it every week. After Pileh the boat moves to a reef snorkelling site with coral and reef fish, and later you get a full hour on Khai Nai or Khai Maew Island, where sheet corals sit within easy reach of a clean white beach.
How does the day run?
- 07:45 — Pickup from your hotel (shared van) to the pier; check-in with snacks, bread, tea, coffee and juice, plus a program briefing from the guides.
- Speedboat to Phi Phi Leh: Loh Samah Bay and about an hour at Maya Bay.
- Pileh Lagoon — swimming, bow-jumping and paddleboard time.
- Reef snorkelling stop with coral and tropical fish.
- Buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don with tea, coffee and fruit.
- Viking Cave (viewed from the boat — note the cliff paintings), then Monkey Beach.
- About an hour at Khai Nai or Khai Maew Island for snorkelling and beach time.
- 17:00–17:30 — Return to the pier and drop-off at your hotel.
Is this tour right for you?
We send first-time Phi Phi visitors here when Maya Bay is the non-negotiable item on their list — the long Maya stop is the selling point. Snorkellers get three separate in-water chances (Pileh, the reef stop, Khai).
It is not ideal for people who cannot handle an hour of open-water speedboat each way; from June to October the west swell adds bounce, and motion tablets are your friend. For a steadier hull, compare the Phi Phi Cruiser big boat. If you would rather trade Khai for a quieter island, look at the SeaStar Bamboo Island trip.
What should you bring?
Swimwear worn under clothes, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, hat, dry bag — and cash, because the Phi Phi national park fee is collected separately on the day, as it is on every operator’s boat. Our guide to what a Phi Phi tour price includes in 2026 lists every extra you should expect, and the full line-up of departures is on our Phi Phi Islands tours page. We are a family-run shop — ask us anything on WhatsApp.
Frequently asked questions
Can you swim inside Maya Bay?
No. Since the bay reopened after its three-year restoration, swimming inside Maya Bay is prohibited and rangers enforce it. You visit the beach on foot via the boardwalk. Swimming happens at Pileh Lagoon, the reef stop and Khai Island.
How long do you get at Maya Bay on this tour?
Approximately one hour — longer than many speedboat programs allow. Enough for the boardwalk, photos and unhurried time on the sand.
Is the national park fee included?
No. The Phi Phi national park fee is paid in cash during the tour, on top of the ticket. Message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you the current amount so you can bring the right cash.
What is included in the tour?
Hotel transfer, pier check-in snacks and drinks, English-speaking guides, the speedboat program, buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don with tea, coffee and fruit, and snorkelling stops. Mask, snorkel and life jackets are provided on board.
