Guests planning to island-hop from Phuket ask us this constantly, so here is the plain version we give across the counter. The right choice depends on whether you are travelling with luggage to a new hotel, or just want a day out.

The scheduled ferry is the workhorse. It is the calmest ride, handles luggage easily, and is the most economical way to move between Phuket, Phi Phi Don, Krabi (Ao Nang and Klong Jirad) and Lanta. It runs to a fixed timetable, so you plan your day around it. A join-in speedboat is faster and better if you also want to snorkel the bays en route, but it is less comfortable with big bags and pricier. A private transfer — car plus boat, or a private speedboat — is the most flexible and door-to-door, and the one we recommend for families with lots of luggage, tight connections, or anyone who dislikes waiting at a pier.

If you are simply relocating to a Phi Phi or Lanta hotel, the ferry is almost always the sensible answer. If your priority is scenery and swimming, look at a private speedboat or join-in tour instead.

Where does the ferry go?

The service connects Phuket’s Rassada Pier with the main island-hopping destinations on the Andaman coast:

• Phuket (Rassada Pier) ↔ Phi Phi Don (Ton Sai Pier) — the core route, running morning and afternoon
• Phi Phi Don → Krabi (Klong Jirad Pier) — onward to the Krabi mainland
• Phi Phi Don → Ao Nang (Nopparat Thara) — for the Ao Nang and Railay area
• Phi Phi Don → Ko Lanta (Saladan Pier) — via a speedboat link

Why book your ferry transfer ahead?

In high season and over holidays the popular sailings fill up, and a missed connection between the Phuket ferry and the Lanta speedboat can cost you half a day. Booking through a real local shop means we check that your pick-up, ferry and any onward link actually connect — rather than you buying separate tickets that don’t quite meet. What is included, and what you pay on the day

The transfer normally includes hotel pick-up or drop-off in Phuket from the standard free zones and injury insurance. Not included: pick-up from outlying areas (a surcharge or private car may apply) and the national park fee where relevant, which is paid in cash. Because this varies by your hotel and route, message us and we’ll spell out exactly what applies before you travel.

Is the ferry right for you?

It suits independent travellers and families relocating between islands with luggage, budget-conscious travellers, and anyone who prefers a steady, stable boat over a bouncy speedboat. It is not the best pick if you want to snorkel and sightsee on the way — for that, take a tour boat. If you are prone to seasickness the ferry is actually the gentler option, but still bring tablets for the open-water stretch.

What should you bring?

Your passport or ID for the boat manifest, a light rain layer in green season, motion-sickness tablets, water, and cash for any national park fee or outlying pick-up.
