What will you actually do in a full day?

The full day gives the elephants — and you — room to breathe, which is why we prefer it over the rushed half-day for first-timers. A typical day runs like this (times and order are a guideline, not a timetable):

• 08.30 — Hotel pick-up, then a briefing on the Chalong elephant-retirement project and how to behave around the animals.
• Meet the elephants and learn to read their behaviour and moods.
• Prepare food and hand-feed them.
• Plant and gather crops the camp grows for the herd.
• Scrub, shower and mud-spa with the elephants, then swim alongside them.
• Coffee break and a short walk through the natural surroundings.
• Thai buffet lunch.
• Visit to the Big Buddha viewpoint for island-wide views.
• 16.00 — Return to your hotel.

The camp sits on Nakkerd Hill near the great white Buddha statue, so you get sweeping views of southern Phuket and the surrounding islands as part of the day.

It is a brilliant day for families — the kids remember mud-bathing an elephant far longer than any beach — and for anyone who wants close animal contact without the guilt of riding. What should you bring?

You will get wet and muddy — that is the whole point. Bring or wear quick-dry clothes you do not mind ruining, a swimsuit underneath, water shoes or old sandals with grip, a towel, sunscreen and a dry change of clothes for the ride home.
