Why choose a longtail boat over a speedboat?
This is the question we answer most often across the counter in Chalong. A longtail is slower, louder in its own charming way, and sits low on the water — and that is exactly the point. Phang Nga Bay is not open sea; it is a sheltered maze of limestone towers and mangrove channels where a longtail can drift close to the cliffs while speedboats have to keep their distance. You see the bay the way local fishermen have seen it for generations.
Because the bay is protected from swell, the ride stays comfortable nearly all year. Guests who worry about seasickness on speedboat trips tell us the longtail felt like gliding on a lake. If you would still rather cover more ground faster, the same operator runs a speedboat version of this James Bond tour.
What does the day look like?
There are two programs on this trip — same route, one difference: whether you add sea-cave canoeing.
James Bond 1 — with Sea Canoe
- 09:00–09:30 — Pick up from your hotel by minibus.
- Visit Monkey Cave (Suwankuha Temple), a cave shrine with a reclining Buddha and resident macaques.
- Board a longtail boat at Phang Nga pier and cruise through Phang Nga Bay National Park.
- Visit Koh Panyee Muslim floating village and have lunch.
- Visit James Bond Island and Khao Phing Kan.
- Sea-cave canoeing at Talu Island.
- Return via Surakul pier; 18:00–18:30 arrive back at your hotel.
James Bond 2 — Sightseeing only follows the identical route without the Talu Island canoe stop — a good pick for guests who prefer to stay dry or have limited mobility.
When is the best time to do this tour?
Our honest advice: the canoe caves at Talu Island depend on the tide. At high water some cave passages close up; at low water you paddle straight through into hidden lagoons. The operator plans around this daily, which is why departure details can shift slightly — another reason we like booking by WhatsApp chat rather than a fixed app booking. And because the bay is sheltered, this route runs happily through the green season too, when the cliffs are at their most dramatic.
Is this tour right for you?
We send guests here when they want the classic, unhurried version of Phang Nga Bay: temple, village, movie island, mangroves. It suits couples, photographers and travellers who find speedboats too rushed. It is not for you if you want beach time and swimming stops — this is a sightseeing day, not a beach day. For sand and swimming, look at the SeaStar CANEO with Yao Yai beach club.
Before booking anywhere, it is worth reading our honest Klook vs local agency comparison — and you can see every route on our James Bond Island tours page.
What should you bring?
Light clothes, swimwear if you take the canoe option, sunscreen, a hat, and modest cover-ups for the temple and Koh Panyee village. Keep small cash handy for the national park fee, which is collected separately. Secure your phone — the monkeys at Suwankuha Temple are professional thieves.

Frequently asked questions
Is the longtail boat safe and comfortable?
Yes. Phang Nga Bay is sheltered water, longtails carry life jackets, and the ride is calm and close to the scenery. It is slower than a speedboat, which is exactly why many guests prefer it.
What is the difference between the two programs?
James Bond 1 includes sea-cave canoeing at Talu Island; James Bond 2 is the same sightseeing route without the canoe stop. Tell us which one you want when you message us.
Does the tour include hotel transfer and lunch?
Yes. Minibus pickup from your hotel is between 09:00 and 09:30, lunch is served at Koh Panyee floating village, and you are back at your hotel around 18:00–18:30.
Can children join this tour?
Yes, families join regularly. Children ride the longtail with life jackets, and the canoeing at Talu Island is guide-paddled, so no experience is needed.
How much does the tour cost?
We don’t publish prices because boat rates in Phuket change daily. Message our Chalong shop on WhatsApp for today’s price and honest advice on which program fits you.
