swell onto the west coast, beaches such as Kata, Kata Noi, Nai Harn and Kalim get clean, manageable waves.
This is not big-wave surfing — it is exactly the mellow, sandy-bottom kind of break that is ideal for learning and for
intermediate surfers wanting a fun session.

When is the surf season — which months have waves?

This is the single most important thing to get right, and it catches a lot of people out. Phuket’s surf runs in the
green season, roughly May to October, with the most consistent waves usually around June to September. In the
dry, high-tourist season (November to April) the west coast is typically flat and glassy — beautiful for swimming, no
good for surfing. So if surfing is a priority for your trip, come in the monsoon months. Kata in particular has the most
reliable beginner waves and is where the island’s small surf community and its annual contests are based.

Is Phuket surfing right for you?

If you have never surfed, this is a lovely place to start: warm water, soft beach breaks and instructors used to first-timers.
If you are an experienced surfer chasing powerful waves, be realistic — Phuket is fun, not world-class, and you will enjoy
it most as a relaxed session rather than a bucket-list barrel. Strong swimming ability matters, because monsoon surf comes with
rip currents. Always surf near the flags and lifeguards, and if red flags are up, stay out — we would
rather lose the booking than see a guest in trouble.

What should you bring, and how do lessons work?

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard if you have one, and water. Everything else — soft-top board, and an instructor
for lessons — is provided on the beach. A beginner lesson typically gets you standing on small white-water waves in a
single session. Mornings are usually cleaner before the afternoon wind, so we book early slots where we can.

How do beginner surf lessons work here?

A first lesson starts on the sand: your instructor covers the parts of the board, how to pop up, and — crucially in monsoon
surf — how to read the beach and stay safe. Then you are into the warm white water on a stable soft-top board, where most people
catch and ride a broken wave and get to their feet in that first session. From there it is repetition: paddling, timing and reading
the sets. Kata’s forgiving beach break is a genuinely good classroom, and lessons are usually kept small so you get real attention. We
book morning slots where we can, because the surf is typically cleaner before the afternoon onshore wind.

Why check the surf with a local shop first?
