A FlowRider is a stationary wave machine that pumps a thin sheet of fast-moving water up a padded slope, letting you bodyboard or flowboard on an endless, controllable wave without leaving the spot. It runs whatever the weather and is a huge hit with teens. We arrange sessions from our family-run, TAT-licensed shop in Chalong (licence No. 34/03373).

What is a FlowRider?
A FlowRider (a type of surf simulator, sometimes called a sheet-wave or FlowBarrel) shoots a thin, fast layer of water up a
soft, cushioned incline. You ride it in place — lying down on a bodyboard, or standing on a smaller flowboard — carving
back and forth on a wave that never ends and never moves. Because falls are onto a padded surface and cushioned water, it feels far
safer than ocean surfing, and an instructor coaches you the whole time.
Why is it perfect for teenagers and all-weather days?
This is our go-to recommendation for two situations. First, teenagers: it is high-energy, endlessly repeatable,
looks fantastic on camera and turns into a friendly competition of who can stay up longest — groups of teens spend hours on it.
Second, an all-weather backup: unlike surfing, kitesurfing or boat sports, the FlowRider does not care about swell,
wind or rain. When Phuket’s sea is flat in the dry season or rough in the green season, or when a storm cancels a boat day, the
FlowRider still runs. It is the reliable rainy-afternoon rescue for families.
Is it right for you?
It suits almost everyone from about school age up who is reasonably active — children (with the venue’s age and height
rules), teens and adults all enjoy it. You start lying on a bodyboard, which anyone can do within minutes, and progress to standing
as your balance improves; standing is genuinely challenging and rewarding. You do not need to swim well because the water is shallow
and moving over a solid surface, but do expect to get tumbled and soaked — that is half the fun.
What should you know and bring?
Wear swimwear that stays on in fast water (a one-piece or well-tied shorts), and bring a change of clothes and a towel. Remove
loose jewellery and empty pockets. Listen to the instructor’s briefing on how to fall safely — going with the flow rather than
fighting it saves your dignity. Sessions are usually sold by time, and you share the wave with a small group, taking turns.
How do you book, and what pairs well?
Tell us your group, ages and date and we will quote that day’s price and confirm any age or height rules. If your crew wants real
water too, pair it with wakeboarding or surfing when the swell is up. See all our
sport & activities or visit our Chalong shop. Message us on
WhatsApp to book.
How do you progress from bodyboard to standing?
Almost everyone starts lying down on a bodyboard, gripping the handles while the instructor holds you in the flow and then lets you
find your own balance — most people are riding within minutes and grinning within seconds. The next step, kneeling, teaches you to
feel the water’s push. Standing on the flowboard is the real challenge: it demands the same edge control as snowboarding, and staying up
for more than a moment is a genuine achievement worth working towards. Because the wave never ends and the queue moves fast, you get lots
of short, repeated tries, which is exactly how skills stick — and why the FlowRider is so addictive for groups.
Why book through us?
As a family-run, TAT-licensed shop at Chalong Circle, we can tell you the current age and height rules, suggest the right session
length for your group, and confirm availability so a big group of teens is not left waiting. It is the one activity we recommend without
hesitation when the weather turns, because it runs whatever the sea is doing. No online pre-payment is needed. Message us on WhatsApp
with your group, ages and dates and we will quote today’s price.

Frequently asked questions
What is a FlowRider and is it like real surfing?
A FlowRider is a stationary wave machine that pumps a thin sheet of fast water up a padded slope, so you ride an endless wave in one spot. It shares the balance skills of surfing but is safer, coached, and works without ocean waves.
Is the FlowRider good for teenagers?
Yes, it is one of our top picks for teens. It is high-energy, endlessly repeatable, great for photos and turns into a fun competition, so groups of teenagers happily spend hours on it.
Does the FlowRider work in bad weather?
Yes. Unlike surfing or boat sports it does not depend on swell, wind or rain, so it is the reliable backup on flat-sea days, rough green-season days or when a storm cancels a boat trip.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Not really. The water is shallow and flows over a solid padded surface, so swimming ability is not essential, though you should expect to get tumbled and soaked. An instructor briefs you on how to fall safely.
Is there an age or height limit?
Venues usually have minimum age or height rules for safety. Tell us the ages in your group when you book and we will confirm the current requirements.
