What does “sanctuary” really mean — and what should you ask before you book?

The word “sanctuary” is used loosely in Phuket, so here is how we explain it across the counter. A genuine sanctuary model is built around the elephant, not the tourist. That means the animals set the pace — they roam, forage and bathe when they choose — and visitors observe and assist rather than direct. There is no riding, no chairs, no painting or football shows, and groups are kept small so a herd is never crowded.

Before you book anywhere, ask the operator these plain questions: Do the elephants ever carry riders? How many groups visit each animal per day? Is bathing led by the elephant’s mood, or scheduled for photos? Can the elephants move away from people when they want to? Honest answers to those questions tell you far more than the sign at the gate. We only send guests to places we would visit ourselves, as a family-run shop that has to look these camps in the eye.

What will you actually do on the day?

Expect a slower, gentler rhythm than a splashy bathing tour. After hotel pick-up and a short drive into the hills, you learn how to approach the herd calmly, prepare and hand-feed them, walk with them as they forage, and — if the elephants are in the mood — join them for a mud spa and a bathe. There is time to simply watch them be elephants, which is the part guests remember. Times and order are a guideline, as the animals lead the day.

Morning or afternoon departure?

The early-morning slot (pick-up from around 06.30–07.45) is our usual recommendation: cooler air, more active elephants and better light. The midday start (from around 11.30–12.00, back by late afternoon) suits families who don’t want a dawn alarm, or anyone with a lazy morning planned. Both are roughly half-day visits.

Is this the right elephant tour for you?

Choose this if you want a calm, hands-off-leaning, welfare-forward day and are happy to observe on the elephants’ terms. Guests with limited mobility should message us first — the terrain is natural and uneven.

What should you bring?

Light, quick-dry clothes you don’t mind getting muddy, a swimsuit underneath if bathing is on, closed shoes or grippy sandals for the trail, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, water and a dry change of clothes. Leave valuables at the hotel.
