Elephant Bathing Half Day Tour

The Elephant Bathing Half Day Tour is a shorter no-riding elephant experience from Phuket, arranged by our licensed Chalong agency. In roughly four hours at a retirement camp you feed, scrub, mud-bathe and swim with rescued elephants. Choose a morning start (around 08.30–12.30) or a late-morning slot (around 11.00–15.00), with hotel pick-up included from most beach areas.

What should you wear when you know you’ll get muddy and wet?

This is the advice guests thank us for most, because nobody warns them. You are going to get soaked and covered in mud — that is the experience, not an accident. So dress for it from the hotel and save yourself a soggy taxi ride.

• Wear a swimsuit under your clothes. You will be in the pool and the mud with the elephants.
• Old, quick-dry clothes over the top. A rash guard or an old t-shirt and shorts you don’t mind staining brown. Cotton stays wet all morning; synthetic dries faster.
• Water shoes or old sandals with grip. The ground around the bathing pool is slippery clay. Flip-flops slide off; bare feet find every stone.
• A dry change of clothes and a towel in a bag for the ride home. We can’t stress this enough.
• Leave valuables at the hotel. Phones and mud do not mix. If you must bring a camera, bring a waterproof pouch.

A raincoat is provided, and injury insurance and an English-speaking guide are included. Sunscreen goes on before you meet the elephants, not after — you won’t want to touch your face with muddy hands.

Morning or late-morning — which slot should you pick?

We send most guests on the earlier start. The elephants are livelier before the midday heat, the light is better for photos, and you have the rest of the afternoon free for the beach or a rest. The later slot suits families with young children who are slow starters, or anyone combining the morning with something else first. Whichever you choose, the running order is a guideline, not a strict timetable.

What does the half day include?

A briefing on the retirement camp and elephant behaviour, hand-feeding, scrubbing and showering, a mud spa and a swim alongside the animals. It is the same warm, hands-on contact as our full day — just without the lunch, the Big Buddha stop and the slower pace. Is the half day right for you?

It is ideal if your Phuket schedule is tight, if you have small children who tire quickly, or if you simply want the elephant experience without giving up a whole day. It is not for you if you want to stay clean, or if you were hoping to ride — we don’t offer riding, and we’ll happily explain why over WhatsApp. This is a no-riding camp, in line with how we choose every elephant partner as a family-run shop.
