What is a “hong” — and why go after lunch?

A hong (Thai for “room”) is a hidden lagoon inside a limestone island, reachable only by slipping through a sea cave at the right tide. Phang Nga Bay is full of them, and the timing of this tour is its genius. While the morning fleets fight for space at the famous stops, Hong by Starlight leaves around midday and enters the caves in the quiet afternoon — then stays out past sunset, when the bay belongs to almost no one.

What happens after dark?

Three things, stacked on top of each other. First, sunset over the karst towers with a Thai buffet dinner on deck. Then you return to the kayaks in darkness and build your own kratong — a floating flower-and-candle offering, recreating the Loi Krathong ceremony — and set it on the black water inside a hong. And as the paddles dip, the sea itself answers: bioluminescent plankton sparking green-white around every stroke. Some nights fireflies join in along the cave mouths. No photo does it justice, which is rather the point.

What does the day look like?

Times are approximate — cave entries depend on the tide.

• 11:30–12:30 — Pickup from your hotel.
• 12:00–13:00 — Board the modern twin-engine escort boat at Ao Po pier; Thai-style light lunch and a trip-and-nature briefing.
• 14:30 — First island: explore one or two caves and hongs by canoe, a professional paddler guiding each boat.
• 15:30 — Cruise to the second island.
• 16:00 — Two more caves and hongs.
• 16:45 — Free self-paddling, swimming, and kratong-making while the light goes gold.
• 17:30 — Thai buffet dinner during the Phang Nga Bay sunset.
• 18:30 — Back into the kayaks in the dark: float your kratong and watch the bioluminescent plankton.
• 20:00–20:15 — Arrive at Ao Po pier; 21:00–21:30 back at your hotel.

Swimwear, a change of dry clothes for the evening, a light layer for the ride home, sunscreen for the afternoon and mosquito repellent for dusk. A dry bag for your phone is essential in the canoes — and for the plankton, trust your eyes more than your camera.

Will I really see bioluminescent plankton?

Does this tour visit James Bond Island?
