Elephant Trekking is a short elephant-back ride at a safari camp near Phuket’s Big Buddha, arranged through our licensed Chalong agency. The trek lasts about 30 minutes over the hillside with jungle and island views. Rides start at the camp at 09.30, 13.00 and 16.00, and guests arrange their own transport to the camp. Injury insurance, a raincoat and an English-speaking guide are included.

Let’s be straight with you, because we have this chat at the counter every week. “Elephant trekking” means riding an elephant, and riding is a topic worth understanding before you decide. Many travellers today prefer no-riding experiences, and we respect that completely. If close contact without riding is what you’re after, we’ll happily point you to a jungle sanctuary visit or an elephant bathing day instead — no hard sell.

If you do choose to trek, this is a short 30-minute ride rather than an all-day haul, and the camp sits on the hillside near Big Buddha with genuine views. We’ll tell you honestly what’s involved so you can make your own call. Whatever you pick, we book it as a real family-run shop in Chalong — we’d rather you have the right day than the day we sell most.

What is the trek actually like?

You ride from the safari camp along hillside and jungle trails for roughly half an hour, looking out over the south of the island. Rides run at set times — 09.30, 13.00 and 16.00 — so you turn up at the camp for your slot. This tour covers the trek itself; transport to the camp is on you, so factor in a taxi or your own scooter. Injury insurance, a raincoat for sudden showers and an English-speaking guide are included.

Is elephant trekking right for you?

It suits travellers who specifically want the classic ride-and-view experience and are comfortable on a moving elephant. It is not the tour for you if you have back or hip problems, are pregnant, or feel uneasy at height on an animal — tell us and we’ll suggest a gentler ground-level option. Very young children should be with an adult. If you’re unsure, message us and we’ll talk it through before you commit.

What should you bring and when should you go?

Wear light clothes and closed shoes, bring sunscreen, a hat, water and insect repellent, and keep valuables secure while riding. The 09.30 morning slot is the coolest and most comfortable for both you and the elephant; the 16.00 slot gives softer light for photos but can still be warm. We usually steer guests away from the hottest midday hours.
