Speedboat, big boat or catamaran — an honest comparison

We sell all three from our shop in Chalong, so here is the advice we give face to face. A speedboat like this one is the only way to fit Maya, Pileh, Viking Cave, a snorkel reef, Monkey Beach, lunch and Khai into one day — speed buys you stops. The cost is comfort: an hour of open-water slamming each way, spray in the back rows, and no shade once you are wet. A big cruise boat rolls gently instead of slamming, has toilets, shade and room to walk, but covers fewer stops. A sailing catamaran is the most comfortable of all and the slowest — beautiful, but you will not see seven points in a day.

Rule of thumb we use: under 50 years old, reasonable sea legs, want everything — speedboat. Prone to seasickness, travelling with grandparents or a baby — take the Phi Phi Cruiser big boat and enjoy the day instead of enduring it.

What does this speedboat day include?

  • 07:00 — Pickup from your hotel and transfer to Royal Phuket Marina.
  • 09:00 — Check-in, small snack and tour briefing.
  • 09:30 — Depart for Phi Phi Leh: sweeping bays and huge limestone cliffs.
  • Maya Beach — the cove made world-famous by “The Beach” — visited on foot under the post-reopening rules.
  • Pileh Lagoon, the “swimming pool in the sea”: swim, paddleboard, admire.
  • Viking Cave photo pass, then reef snorkelling with abundant marine life.
  • Monkey Beach sightseeing, and a buffet lunch with desserts at a beachside restaurant on Ton Sai Bay, Phi Phi Don.
  • Khai Island — white sand and clear shallows for a final swim.
  • 16:30 — Return to Royal Phuket Marina and transfer to your hotel.

How do you avoid seasickness on a Phi Phi speedboat?

Four things we tell every guest. Take a motion tablet 30 minutes before boarding, not when you already feel green. Sit in the back third of the boat, where the slamming is softest. Keep your eyes on the horizon during the crossing, not on your phone. And eat a light breakfast — empty and overfull stomachs both lose. November to April the sea is usually kind; June to October the monsoon swell means honest bounce, and on rough days the crew may reorder or skip stops for safety. That is professionalism, not a scam.

What is not included in the price?

The Phi Phi national park fee — paid in cash on the day, on every operator’s boat, on top of the tour price. Bring cash also for drinks or souvenirs on Phi Phi Don. The full breakdown of what tour prices do and don’t cover is in our Phi Phi price guide for 2026. To weigh this trip against its siblings — for example the Bamboo Island version by the same operator — browse our Phi Phi Islands tours page or just ask us on WhatsApp; we are a family-run shop and we answer straight.

Frequently asked questions

How rough is the speedboat ride to Phi Phi?

About an hour of open water each way. Smooth most days from November to April, bouncier June to October. Take a motion tablet 30 minutes before departure and sit near the back if you are sensitive.

Can you swim at Maya Beach?

No — since Maya Bay’s reopening, swimming inside the bay is prohibited. You walk in for photos and beach time. Swimming and paddleboarding happen at Pileh Lagoon, the reef stop and Khai Island.

Is the national park fee included?

No. The Phi Phi national park fee is collected in cash on the day, separate from the tour price — standard practice for all Phuket operators. Message us for the current amount.

Where does the tour leave from?

Royal Phuket Marina on the island’s east coast. Hotel pickup at 07:00 is included, check-in at 09:00, departure 09:30 and return around 16:30.
