Why the rainy season is actually the best time to raft

Here’s the tip that surprises almost every guest at our counter: for white water rafting, the “bad weather” months are the good ones. Rafting needs water in the river, and the Phang Nga rivers are rain-fed. From roughly May to November — Phuket’s green season — the rains lift the water level, the rapids run faster and fuller, and the Level II–III sections feel genuinely lively. In the dry months the same run can be tame and slow, sometimes little more than a float.

So when travellers apologise for booking in the “wet” season, we tell them the truth: you’ve picked the right time for this one. A rain shower on a rafting day is nothing — you’re soaked and in the river anyway. The only real limit is safety: after very heavy storms the camp may pause runs until levels are safe, which is exactly what you want. Message us close to your date and we’ll tell you honestly how the river is running that week.

What’s packed into the day?

It’s a genuine combo, not just rafting. A typical day (times and order are a guideline):

  • 07.00–08.30 — Hotel pick-up.
  • Stop at Suwankuha (the monkey cave temple) to watch and feed the monkeys.
  • Arrive at the Phang Nga rafting camp — briefing, rafting training, then 5 km of Level II–III white water.
  • Riverside lunch with fresh fruit, tea and coffee.
  • Your choice of a 30-minute ATV ride, 30-minute elephant trekking and elephant bathing.
  • Elephant show, zipline flying fox and time to relax at a waterfall.
  • 17.00 — Back in Phuket and transfer to your hotel.

All activities, lunch, injury insurance and an English-speaking guide are included.

Is this tour right for you — and the kids?

Let’s be honest about the age limits, because they matter here. The minimum age for rafting is 8, and you must be 12 to drive an ATV yourself (younger children can usually ride as a passenger — check with us). It’s a big, active day with a long drive each way, so very young children and anyone who tires easily may find it a lot. If you have a mixed-age family, message us and we’ll tell you honestly whether it fits.

What should you bring?

You will get soaked, so wear a swimsuit under quick-dry clothes and old shoes or sandals that strap on (river rocks steal loose flip-flops). Bring a dry change of clothes and a towel for the drive home, sunscreen, and a waterproof pouch or leave your phone in the vehicle. A waterproof action camera is ideal for the rapids.
