Phuket has no beach that is truly secret any more, but five bays are still much quieter than Patong or Karon: Freedom Beach, Tri Trang, Laem Singh, Banana Beach and Ao Sane. Most of them ask for a little effort, such as a longtail boat, a walk over rocks or a narrow clifftop road, so plan around the sea conditions and confirm access locally before you go.
What “secret” Means in Phuket Today
Every beach here appears on map apps and travel sites, so none is undiscovered. A secret beach is really one without a big resort strip, where you walk, take a boat or drive a small road. Access also changes: the Laem Singh staircase has been reported closed since 2017, and the old path to Banana Beach in late 2025. Treat these directions as a starting point. We leave out entrance fees and boat fares because operators change them without notice.
Near Patong: Freedom Beach and Tri Trang
Freedom Beach is a small white-sand cove on the west coast between Patong and Karon, enclosed by forested headlands and granite rocks. Longtail boats leave from the southern end of Patong Beach,, and the ride takes about ten minutes. Or walk down a steep, uneven forest trail from the road; guides put the main trail at roughly 15 to 20 minutes, so wear proper shoes. Walk-in visitors are charged an entry fee, boats generally do not run when the sea is rough, and there is no permanent lifeguard station.
Tri Trang Beach is a public beach a few kilometres south of Patong at the end of a long road, so it stays calmer than Patong. Follow the road south from Patong for several kilometres, and check the entrance pin on your map app. Guides note rocks and coral in the water, so bring water shoes. Paradise Beach, on the same headland, is a private beach club with an entrance fee, so it is not a quiet secret.
West Coast: Laem Singh and Banana Beach
Laem Singh is a small cove backed by granite boulders and palms, between Surin and Kamala beaches. The roadside staircase has been reported closed since April 2017 after a land dispute, so most visitors now walk about 15 to 20 minutes over the rocks from the south end of Surin Beach or take a small local boat from Surin. The boat may not run in heavy monsoon weather. Facilities are minimal, so bring water. Our Kamala Beach guide covers the neighbouring bay.
Banana Beach is on Phuket’s north-west coast between Nai Thon and Layan. It used to be a hidden cove reached by a steep path, but guides report that a car park and a beach club with sunbeds, toilets and showers opened in late 2025, and a parking fee applies. It is easier to reach now, but no longer secret. In the monsoon, local guidance advises against swimming unless the sea is calm.
South Coast: Ao Sane Near Nai Harn
Ao Sane is a small rocky bay on the northern headland of Nai Harn Beach, on Phuket’s south-west coast. It is three compact bays separated by rocky outcrops, with coarse sand and boulders. A narrow clifftop road of roughly one kilometre from Nai Harn leads to a small parking area above the beach. Coral lies close to shore, so it suits snorkelling if you bring your own gear in the calm season. As of September 2026, guides report no facilities on site, so pack water. It gets busy in high season. The Laem Phromthep viewpoint is nearby.
Timing, Safety and Getting There
The sea on Phuket’s west coast is usually calmest from around November to April. From about May to October the southwest monsoon brings high waves and rip currents, and a red flag means swimming is prohibited. Do not count on lifeguard cover at small bays.
A scooter or taxi is the usual way to reach these beaches. The road to Ao Sane is narrow, so ride only if you are experienced and read our scooter safety checklist. Other options are in our guide to the best way to travel around Phuket.
Frequently Asked Questions

Not really. Guides report that the old hilltop path closed in late 2025 and a car park and beach club opened, and a parking fee applies. The beach sits on the north-west coast between Nai Thon and Layan. It is much easier to reach now, so go early if you want a quieter visit.
